UK-based architecture firm Foster + Partners has unveiled a masterplan for a new sustainable city spanning 3.5km of beachfront on Bahrain’s southwest coast.

The Bilaj Al Jayazer Beach project involves the construction of a walkable mixed-use district containing new homes, hotels, and retail, alongside public green spaces.

Bahrain-based construction firm Cebarco was awarded the contract for the first phase of infrastructure works on the project earlier this year. The works encompass electricity, drinking water, sewage, storm drainage, telecommunications and roads and are expected to take about a year to complete.

Foster + Partners said its designs for the city draw inspiration from Miami’s low-rise Art Deco buildings.

The masterplan is organised around three primary axes: Beach Drive, which spans the full length of the beachfront; Main Boulevard, which is set back and runs parallel; and Bilaj Al Jazayer Avenue, which directly connects the two.

Two large hotels and branded residences bookend the site. The masterplan has been developed for Edamah, the real estate arm of Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company.
