Saudi construction company to build $186 million concrete factory for The Line

The Line is a linear city being constructed in the Neom region in northwest Saudi Arabia. Eventually, the mirrored structure, which will be just 200m wide, could stretch up to 170 kilometres across desert valleys to the Red Sea.

Neom claims that The Line could accommodate nine million people on a footprint of just 34 square kilometres once fully complete.

Asas Al-Mohileb is currently building a complex of batching plants in Neom and will also operate the facility, which will be capable of producing 20,000 cubic metres of ready-mix concrete per day.

Concrete will be a core material for The Line’s substructure and superstructure. The factory’s plants will incorporate carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technology and energy-saving solutions to reduce its environmental impact, according to Neom. 

Peak operations at the factory are expected to start in 2025. A fleet of support vehicles are being mobilized in readiness for operations to start next month.

In an update on construction works for The Line, Neom said that work on the foundation piles has begun, with nearly 1,000 out of over 30,000 piles placed so far, although it is not clear how much distance this covers.

In April this year, Bloomberg reported that it had seen documents relating to the scaling back of the project, which could cost up to $1.5 trillion to build. It is reportedly now expected to reach just 2.4 kilometres by 2030, making it capable of housing around 300,000 people.
